What does a career counselor do?

A career counselor (or career coach/counselor) guides employees and advises them on career matters. Sometimes we get questions about exactly what a career counselor does.

Issues for the career counselor

Issues that the career counselor discusses with a candidate include what profession, field or field of study suits him or her. But there is also investment on a personal level. The career counselor tries to clarify for the candidate what type of person or employee he or she is. What talents does the candidate have? What ambitions does the candidate have in life? In an outplacement process, it is also important to know what successes have already been achieved or what the employee would still like to achieve in the career field. How can he/she improve him/herself and to what extent is the candidate willing to invest in his/her career?

During the process

The career counselor schedules an intake with the candidate. A trajectory with OOM is always individual. Some modules can also be taken in groups if this is desirable. The process begins with this first interview. This allows the career counselor to find out what the candidate's wishes, talents, needs, interests, character traits and areas for improvement are.

Once the career counselor has a good picture of the candidate, he or she can advise and help the candidate search for suitable occupations, fields of study or perhaps a new course. This sometimes involves the use of vocational tests, competency tests and/or personality tests.

The career counselor will prepare reports of everything discussed during the process. This information remains between the career counselor and the candidate.
